A fun way of approaching media literacy

How can newspapers reach young target groups? Today approximately 40 percent of all young people never take the part of the mainstream news media. The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent years and the flow of information is enormous – today anyone can be a publisher.

The Swedish Media Association’s youth project Mediekompass offer young people a fun way of approaching media literacy, press ethics and freedom of expression. Through the website www.mediekompass.se and a weekly newsletter teachers can download lessons based on current affairs with questions based on ethical statements and reflections. Mediekompass also offers education for teachers and workshops for students. In its material Mediekompass always gives young people a fun challenge to stand up for what they believe in and learn about the role of press freedom in a mature democracy.
