Environmental initiatives

Not only is the printing industry in Sweden involved in a variety of environmental initiatives and research projects. Also a number of newspaper companies have come relatively far in this area. Bonnier and Stampen, together with the Swedish Newspaper Publishers' Association among others, are so-called partners in a research centre, called Centre for Sustainable Communications, located at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
During 2010, a specific research project was concluded, focussing on media companies’ business meetings and ICT-solutions for meeting at a distance. The result showed when and why business meetings can be performed using new conferencing technology, while at the same time taking behavioural aspects into consideration. The research result will help newspaper companies to save time and money by reducing the amount of travel and invest in technology for meetings at a distance, as well as understanding what parameters make these conference meetings work in practice.

Another environmental initiative worth mentioning was taken by Schibsted Sweden during 2010. All Swedish Schibsted titles, including newspapers like Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet, relocated into a brand-new eco-friendly building in central Stockholm. Centre for Sustainable Communications analyzed environmental aspects of the company’s travels, locations, electricity use etc in the previous locations, and will perform a comparative analysis in the new Schibsted building in a few years, in order to see what improvements have been made through this relocation process. A project of this kind is unheard of in Sweden before Schibsted took this initiative.
